Spotted: Selfish Podcast

Good morning, friends! For most of y'all it's Happy Fri-YAY, but for The Pie Queen, it's Happy FRY-Day. Something you may not know about me is that I'm always hesitant to jump for joy on Friday's, as they're undoubtedly the busiest day of the week for me.

However, I also love Friday's because they serve as a weekly reminder that what we're doing is for a purpose. So, no matter what this day looks like for you, I hope that it ends with a full and humble heart. For now, coffee...

As promised, I'm here to start your day with an exciting feature in the Spotted Series. If it's your first time joining me, Spotted is a category of the blog that I've reserved for two key things:

1. Sharing a new place The Pie Queen has been spotted, and

2. Highlighting someone I think you should know (for one reason or another).

I believe in what they're doing, why they're doing it, and that their story is important. It is no secret that I LOVE seeing people succeed, so it makes my heart happy to have space where I can place a spotlight on success in & around our community. It is truly buzzing with noteworthy folks, folks!

Today's spotlight is on Allie Martin, creator of the Selfish Podcast.

Although Allie and I went to college together, it wasn't until we were later Bridesmaids in the same wedding that we really got to know one another. Luckily, life had bigger plans than either of us imagined back then, and little did we know we'd eventually cross paths in our professional lives. I am so proud to brag on her today, y'all!

Allie majored in Broadcast Journalism while attending Western Kentucky University. As a student, she took a job working for Revolution 91.7. A fully functioning radio station that is not only unique (and impressive) to campus, it is completely student-run. This is where she fell in love with the concept of working in radio, and that stuck with her long after the job was over.

Switching directions and finding her way into Public Relations, Allie took a job with the International Spa Association (ISPA) after college. During her time with them, she developed a true passion for self-care. *Note that we aren't talking about skin care or spa treatments here, although I can confirm that spa days never hurt...

She began to take a deep interest in what it really means to take care of yourself. From making time for the things we love to learning how to love ourselves at all, Allie acknowledged the significant importance of self-health. This newfound passion, however, fell at a time where the people around her seemed to be doing what they truly loved in life, and, "Why not me?" was the question fueling hers.

Soon after, a friend of Allie's started a Podcast. This was a turning point in her own life, as she realized that this was precisely what she had previously done in radio. "Why not me?" quickly turned to, "Wait, I could do this!"

Pairing passion with acquired knowledge, Allie found what she had been looking for. If a Podcast were going to be the platform, self-love would be the theme. In a society that often views such a notion as self-absorbed or selfish, the message she wanted to make was clearer than ever: "Selfish" isn't always a bad thing. In fact, sometimes it's the best thing we can be for ourselves. Let yourself love.

Out of her own home in Louisville, KY, Allie brought her passion to life. On the hunt for interesting people with an inspiring story to tell, she reached out and recorded ten different episodes before launching the first session of her Selfish Podcast. Guess who made the lineup!? *squeal* Check out The Pie Queen episode here!

Allie conducted the interview over Skype, which I later learned is how she conducts them all. I loved the simplicity and how seamless the process was. What Allie is doing here is beautifully vulnerable, which is why I think it's important. Telling the story of my journey brought out emotions I didn't expect, as I imagine is the case for any guest. My favorite part about this platform is that at any given time you turn it on, you're getting 100% inspiration and positivity. I think we would all agree that the world needs more of that. Go, Allie! :)
